[edit] Homosexuality Laws
Laws against homosexuality exist in Algeria. Homosexual activity is illegal, punishable with up to 3 years imprisonment and a fine between 1,000 and 10,000 Algerian dinars.[1]
Most attempts at marriage end in police action. This was the case in a 2005 attempt.[2]
[edit] Homosexual Life in Algeria
Being homosexual in Algeria means you must live a life outside of the law, because of the homosexuality laws in place. And gay algerians do not face threats just from the government, but also their fellow citizens, as there is an overwhelming majority of fundamental Islamics in the country.
This troublesome and dangerous life led one man, Ramzi Isalam, to seek asylum in the United Kingdom. [3]
[edit] Examples of Homosexual Abuse
Stoning of two men in the street in 2001. [3]
Two men were killed, one in 1994, the other in 1996. [3]
[edit] Islamic Influence
These laws are probably result of a high number of people that believe homosexuality is against the Islamic faith. Algeria is known for extremist laws, such as one banning religious conversion. [4]
