Gayle McKeachnie is a Republican politician in the American state of Utah. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Utah from October 2003 until his administration ended in January 2005. McKeachnie was appointed to the position of Lieutenant Governor of Utah by Governor Olene S. Walker, who ascended to the governorship upon the resignation of former governor Michael O. Leavitt. Governor McKeachnie never had a chance to institute his own legacy, as his term as Lieutenant Governor was limited in its tenure. Lieutenant Governor McKeachnie did, however, continue the process of implementing the HelpAmericaVoteAct of 2002 (HAVA) - but never instituted any policy of his own, rather leaning on former Lt. Gov. Olene Walker's "elections" administrators to carry out those duties.
Gary R. Herbert, upon his election to the office of Utah Lieutenant Governor in 2004, immediately ceased the efforts of his predecessor and his current staff - instead proposing that his own staff of professionals could finish the "HAVA" contract with authority.
Since that time, the office of the Lieutenant Governor has received numerous awards.
Governor McKeachnie has proven to be a wonderful tool for the Huntsman administration as the leader of Rural Affairs - and as a confidant of Lieutenant Governor Gary R. Herbert in his work as Rural Affairs liaison to Gary R. Herbert and the Huntsman administration.
Governor McKeachnie is renowned in Utah as the foremost expert on rural issues, including gas and oil-field discoveries.
