Krio Roots:Genealogy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For a Krio to find their genealogy they must research the Sierra Leone Public Archives at Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
[edit] Krio genealogy
The Krios are not an indigenous African culture but are really a group descended from freed slaves from Nova Scotia, England, and the Caribbean who were brought to Freetown, Sierra Leone. Because most of the Krios have been in Freetown since 1796 and public records have been kept since then, it is considerably easier for the average Krio to trace his or hers ancestry.
[edit] History
The Krios are descendants of four main ex-slave groups: the African American Black Loyalists (from Nova Scotia), the Jamaican Maroons, other West-Indians and the Liberated Africans. Some Krios are also descendants of the Black Poor and of African American ex-slaves who came to Freetown from neighbouring Liberia.
