Georgia College & State University (GCSU) is a public university in Milledgeville, Georgia with over 5,500 students. It is a part of the University System of Georgia and is the state's liberal arts university.
The main campus comprises 43 acres (174,000 m²) in the middle of Milledgeville, near the grounds of what used to be a the former state capital. The front campus is comprised of beautiful antebellum buildings used when Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia. Most of the dorms are located a block from campus along with the sports complex, called the Centennial Center. The Governor's Mansion is also within walking distance of the dormitories and front campus. West Campus, a 500 acre (2 km²) extension a few miles from the main campus, contains Bobcat Village, which is a college apartment complex. GCSU also has campuses in Warner Robins ('Robins Center') and in Macon. In addition, GC&SU operates a large recreational area on Lake Laurel (approximately 15 minutes from the main campus) which is also used by the biology students.
GCSU was originally founded in 1889, and was originally known as Georgia Normal & Industrial College. The school took on other names such as Georgia State College for Women, Women's college of Georgia, and Georgia College before adopting its current name in 1996. Recent proposals for yet another name change—this time back to Georgia College—have met with disapproval from the student body and faculty, as measured by a 2004 administrative survey.
