Germany held a national preselection to choose the two songs that would go to the Eurovision Song Contest 1956. It was held on May 1, 1956 and was presented by Heinz Piper.

"So geht das jede Nacht" and "Das Lied vom großen Glück" were the dual winners of the national selection, but neither prevailed at the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest, which was won by the Swiss entry "Refrain", sung by Lys Assia.
