[edit] Trivia
- The record for the most reigns is Mitsuharu Misawa with 3 titles; combined with his 5 AJPW Triple Crown wins, makes a total of 8 Japanese top flight reigns, the highest for a Japanese wrestler.
- The longest reigning champion is Kenta Kobashi, with a record of two years and 13 title defenses.
- Holders of both the GHC and AJPW Triple Crown titles include Kobashi, Mitsuharu Misawa and Akira Taue.
- Yoshihiro Takayama is the only man to hold both the GHC and IWGP titles.
- Yoshinari Ogawa and Naomichi Marufuji are the only champions who were technically not heavyweights at the time of their reigns.
- There is some debate as to whether the GHC title gained World title status, as Naomichi Marufuji defended the title against Nigel McGuinness in New York, NY at the Ring of Honor event "Glory by Honor V: Night Two" on September 16, 2006.
