The Gibson Les Paul Custom (nicknamed Black Beauty) is a high end variation of the Gibson Les Paul. It was developed in 1957 after Gibson applied for a patent on the humbucker.

The Black Beauty is similar to other high end Les Pauls. The Fret board is constructed of ebony. The frets are low and flat, hence the nickname "Fretless Wonder," and the inlays are real pearl. The body is solid mahogany verses the mahogany-maple combination common in other Les Pauls. It has a solid black finish and the hardware is either gold or nickel silver plated. The Black beauty comes with 2 or 3 humbuckers. Early, pre-humbucker Black Beauties like the 1954 model featured a single-coil pickup with rectangular Alnico polepieces in the neck position and a P-90 pickup in the bridge position. These were generally made obsolete when the humbucker was introduced in 1957.
