Glyptothorax is a genus of sisorid catfish. It is the most species-rich and widely distributed genus in the family with some 65 described species and new forms being discovered on a regular basis. Glyptothorax spp. are found throughout Asia from the Tigris and Euphrates basins to the Pacific.
Like other sisorids, these fish are rheophilic, that is they inhabit fast-flowing streams, where they are adapted to live by using adhesive apparatus ("suckers") on the underside to attach themselves to rocks and prevent being washed away. In Glyptothorax spp. the sucker distinctively takes the form of an area of folded pleats of skin on the underside of the thorax.
