[edit] Plot
According to current sources, the plot is expected to involve two garden gnomes which fall in love with each other, although their families are sworn enemies.
[edit] Production history
Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley wrote the current working version of the script, derived from one written by Rob Sprackling and John Smith, and brought to Disney several years ago by Rocket Pictures.
When Disney bought out Pixar, it was announced that John Lasseter would be appointed Chief Creative Officer of both the Pixar and Disney animation studios. Before he even officially stepped in as COO in April 2006, Lasseter cancelled the project. According to http://www.animated-news.com, it points to a blog that says that this film has been cancelled because Pixar asked, "Why are we making this"? In April, however, John finished a deal with Miramax Films.
Miramax announced an exclusive deal with Rocket Pictures to develop and produce Gnomeo and Juliet, loosely based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and set in the world of tacky garden gnomes. Rocket Pictures producing partners, David Furnish and Steve Hamilton Shaw, who are currently finishing post-production on their latest film It's a Boy Girl Thing, will shepherd the project with Miramax president, Daniel Battsek.
"I have had a longstanding relationship with Rocket Productions and have been following this project since I was at BVI," said Daniel Battsek. "I was thrilled when the opportunity arose to bring 'Gnomeo' to Miramax."
"I am very excited about working with Miramax," stated Elton John. "Gnomeo is an edgy concept and Miramax is the perfect home to push the envelope in animation.
Lyricist Tim Rice has agreed to collaborate with John on the songs for the film. Kate Winslet will provide the voices of one of the characters. Additional casting to be announced at a later date.
Gnomeo and Juliet is to be animated in the UK by producer Baker Bloodworth (Lorenzo, Destino).
