Gomtuu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gomtuu a.k.a. "Tin Man" by Starfleet, is a fictional starship from the sci-fi franchise Star Trek (see the episode "Tin Man"). It is a living bioship that was born far from Federation space, possibly from another galaxy. Although most of its technology is beyond Federation understanding, Gomtuu can protect itself from attacks and has both offensive and defensive capabilities. Like most starships from the Star Trek universe, Gomtuu has both warp drive and transporter abilities.

[edit] Anatomy
[edit] Interior
Gomtuu's interior space consists of multiple organic chambers and canals, that can also change their morphology to better suit the needs of the crew. Inside the interior cavity, Gomtuu also has artificial gravity, lighting and atmospheric generation systems capable of supporting a carbon-based crew.
[edit] Exterior
The exterior of Gomtuu's hull greatly resembles a dark-red botfly maggot. Its aft outer suface is lined with intricate "cracks", and in between these cracks are some sort of glowing, yellow energy. These cracks seem to serve multiple functions:
- A possible Sublight Drive mechanism,
- A Warp Drive system;
- A type of emitter for its "energy burst" weapon.
Although Gomtuu sports very advanced organic technology, its hull is invariably weak and soft, and it apparently does not have a shielding system. Gomtuu's hull, or carapace, is vulnerable to space-generated radiation, like gamma rays or x-rays. Even though such radiation does not directly harm Gomtuu, it can affect Gomtuu's crew.
[edit] Crew/Personnel
Gomtuu used to be manned by a crew until an intense explosion in space caused extreme doses of radiation to pass through its hull. This event killed the crew. Very depressed, Gomtuu decided to wander the galaxy for millennia to search for more of its kind. After this attempt failed, Gomtuu, without a purpose, decided to commit "suicide" by orbiting a soon-to-supernova star, Beta Stromgren.
[edit] First Contact
First contact with Gomtuu occurred in the year 2366, when "Tin Man" was detected by the Vega IX space probe, sent to monitor the Beta Stromgren supernova. However, the Romulans had already detected "Tin Man" and were sending a party to investigate.
First contact was initiated by the Betazoid empath Tam Elbrun, who engaged in telepathic communication with Gomtuu. This was because traditional hails proved to be ineffective in direct communication. Tam communicated the Romulan threat immediately to Gomtuu, who destroyed the Romulan Warbird in self-defense, and severely damaging the USS Enterprise-D. Later on, Data and Tam transported onto Gomtuu, and Elbrun initiated a full telepathic link to "Tin Man", where Gomtuu's eternal pain and suffering where conveyed to him. However, due to the supernova Gomtuu used the same energy wave to propel the Enterprise and another Warbird 3.8 billion kilometers from the blast zone.
After a long and tense moment, Data is transported directly to the Enterprise bridge, through its raised shields. Gomtuu and Elbrun were never seen again, and are presumed alive. By the end of the episode, Elbrun and Gomtuu formed a symbiotic relationship with each other, with Gomtuu providing the silence of one "voice" and Tam providing Gomtuu a reason to live.
