Granite State Credit Union
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Granite State Credit Union or GSCU is a state-chartered credit union based in Manchester, New Hampshire, with branches throughout the state.
The organization was founded by John Edward Grace of Manchester, NH in 1945, with a deposit of only fifteen dollars. Originally chartered as Utility Workers Credit Union, the credit union initially served Public Service Company employees and those of the Manchester Transit Authority. Grace, himself, formerly had been employed as a city bus driver.
His strong leadership, based on the trust of the community he served, led to solid support for the credit union which was renamed in the early 1970s. At that time, the charter was expanded so that anyone who lives in New Hampshire can now be a member.
Grace's daughter, Patricia Lynne Grace Cummings, has written a memoir of his life. A museum exhibit at America's Credit Union Museum on Notre Dame Avenue in Manchester, NH includes a display panel dedicated to John Grace's life, some personal artifacts, a copy of Pat's book, and credit union memorabilia loaned by her. GSCU is a member of NHCUL, or the New Hampshire Credit Union League and CUNA, or the Credit Union National Association.
