Great Warford
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Great Warford is a civil parish and small village in the Borough of Macclesfield, East Cheshire, England. Its inhabitants are generally senior citizens or property developers. It contains two public houses: the Stags Head and the Frozen Mop. One of its most notable buildings is Warford Hall, recently purchased by ex-footballer Ashley Ward. Many of the buildings in the village used to belong to a mental hospital called Mary Dendy Hospital. The hospital has since been demolished, and a new housing estate now occupies the old site. The village is also the location of the David Lewis National Epilepsy Centre, which provides a range of medical, educational, residential and assessment services for people with epilepsy.
The village is part of the prodigious SK9 postcode which has become known as an affluent area.[citation needed] It is approximately 2.5 miles away from Alderley Edge and 4 miles from Wilmslow.
Great Warford includes the hamlets of Dean Green, Gatley Green, Monks Heath and Soss Moss. The population was 287 in 1801, 348 in 1851, 394 in 1901 and 1035 in 1951. The Stag's Head Churches and Chapels:
- Alderley, St. Mary (C of E). The ancient parish church for Great Warford.
- Great Warford, Baptist Chapel. Registers start in 1757, though the chapel was in use before then. It is still in use, and is probably the oldest Baptist chapel in England that has been in continuous use. Baptists first came to this part of Cheshire during the English Civil War. [1]
- Great Warford, Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan). Built 1843, closed 1963. Registers of baptisms 1859-1961 are at the CRO.
