[edit] History of Greek Leftist politics
The Greek Civil War began after the country was liberated from German occupation. Communist guerillas fought against Greek centrist and right-wing governments, who eventually won the war in 1949. Many Greek communists emigrated to the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Albania, and other communist states.
Some Greek regions have traditionally had a large number of communist voters, like Pireas, Nikaia, Koridalos, Renti, Nea Ionia, and nearby regions[citation needed]. Also some of the Greek islands have significant leftist populations, Crete and Ikaria for example[citation needed].
