Greenwich House Pottery
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded in New York's Greenwich Village in 1909, Greenwich House Pottery was a major American outpost of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It was founded as a place both to teach potting skills to new immigrants and to carry on the tradition of art ceramics. Grants by the Rockefellers, Payne Whitneys and Marshall Fields helped give the institution the wherewithal to survive the Depression and thrive throughout the 20th century.
Notable artists teaching at Greenwich House have included Jane Hartsook, Stanley Rosen (1956-1959), Bernard Leach, Pat Stetson, Shoji Hamada, Peter Voulkos, Robert Turner, Tony Hepburn and Margaret Israel.
