Groovies
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to the success of Space Ghost Coast to Coast in the late 90's, Cartoon Network chose to fill commercial airtime with little blocks of padding called "Groovies" and "Shorties", which were similarly constructed little music videos featuring re-cut classic animation and composited new material. These music videos were based on current cartoon network line-ups like the Dexter's Laboratory, The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo, Cow & Chicken, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Yogi Bear, Superfriends, and many others paired with an eclectic mix of music from movie soundtracks, popular songs, as well as songs not in the mainstream, or even the obscure.
Groovies seem to explode and were used quite frequently, but were eventually less and less prevalent on the network, many believe due to the expansion of commercials.
Groovies have had many rebirths, the most recent being titled "Toon Tunes". "Toon Tunes" unfortunately do not show the classic Groovies videos in their original form. Most have been shortened to fit within a standard time.
