O verde representa a flora, o amarelo as riquezas minerais e o azul a esfera celestial. As significações diferem da bandeira original, na qual o verde representaria a Casa de Brangança -- à qual pertencia o imperador Pedro I do Brasil -- e o amarelo a de Habsburgo -- à qual pertencia a imperatriz D. Maria Leopoldina.
