HMS Excellent is not, as the name suggests, a ship. It is the name of a school or, in the British Royal Navy's words,"shore training establishment" in Portsmouth.
It the oldest shore training establishment within the Royal Navy and at the same time one of the newest establishments having been recommissioned in 1994. It delivers a wide range of training functions aimed at preparing officers and sailors personnel for life at sea. HMS Excellent also provides support for a number of lodger units such as the Headquarters of an Admiral, the Commander in Chief Fleet, and the Operational Battle Staffs.
