[edit] Members of Parliament
- Constituency created (1974)
The seat has a history of members switching parties. Ronald Brown, elected in 1974 as a Labour MP, joined the splinter Social Democratic Party in 1981. He held the seat as a SDP member until 1983, when he was defeated by Labour politician Brian Sedgemore. Sedgemore remained a member of the Labour Party for most of his career, but defected to the Liberal Democrats, the successors to the SDP, shortly before the 2005 election, in which he did not run. The Liberal Democrats were unable to hold the seat, which is again held by a Labour MP, Meg Hillier.
