Hamid Algabid

Hamid Algabid (born 1941 in Belbedji, Niger) is a Nigerien politician and leader of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP-Jama'a) party.
A member of the Tuareg ethnic group, Algabid served as Prime Minister of Niger from 14 November 1983 to 15 July 1988. From 1989 to 1996, he was secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Running as the RDP-Jama'a presidential candidate in elections held on 17 October 1999, Algabid placed fourth out of seven candidates, winning 10.83% of the vote.
He participated in the presidential election held on 16 November 2004, finishing last out of six candidates with 4.89% of the vote.
Algabid recently served as the African Union's (AU) special envoy to Sudan.
