[edit] Profile and Awards

Cellist Han-Na Chang has established an extraordinary international career, performing regularly on the most prestigious concert stages of Europe, North America and Asia. She first won recognition for her exceptional musical gifts in 1994 at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris taking, at the age of eleven, the First Prize as well as the Contemporary Music Prize, unanimously chosen for both awards by Maestro Rostropovich and ten other jury members. Since that time, her superb artistry and virtuosity coupled with the astonishing depth of her interpretations have placed Han-Na Chang at the forefront of the world’s new generation of artists.

A two-time Grammy nominee and an exclusive recording artist for EMI Classics, Miss Chang made her first recording in November 1995 with Mstislav Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra, of Tchaikovsky’s “Rococo” Variations, Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No.1, Fauré’s “Elegie” and Bruch’s “Kol Nidrei”. The sensational success of her debut album, which brought Miss Chang the Young Artist of the Year Award of the ECHO Klassik-Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, was followed by her recording of the two Haydn Cello Concertos with Giuseppe Sinopoli directing the Staatskapelle Dresden. “The Swan”, her third album, is an anthology of short works for cello and orchestra recorded with Leonard Slatkin and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Her most recent release featuring Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante and the Cello Sonata with Antonio Pappano directing the LSO has been awarded the ECHO Klassik Concerto Recording of the Year, the Cannes Classical Awards Concerto Recording of the Year, the Caecilia Prize and voted the best Concerto Recording of the Year by Gramophone Magazine. All four releases have become best sellers worldwide. In the autumn of this year, Han-Na Chang’s highly-anticipated new recording was released. It features Shostakovich’s Concerto No.1 and the Shostakovich Sonata with Antonio Pappano directing the LSO.

Miss Chang’s upcoming schedule includes collaborations with the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Munich Philharmonic, the Montreal Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C., the Orchestre de Paris, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome, the NDR in Hamburg and the Gurzenich Orchestra in Cologne.

Also an avid recitalist, Miss Chang maintains a balance between her appearances with orchestras and her chamber music activities. Recent recitals have included appearances in Milan, Florence, Bologna, Paris, Lisbon, Bilbao, Athens and London (Wigmore Hall), and extensively in Japan. The next tour of recitals in musical capitals of the US, Europe and Asia will bring Miss Chang back to her fans in cities as far and wide spread as London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Montreal, Milan, Florence, Bologna, Rome, Athens, Brussels, Valencia, and Tokyo throughout the next two seasons.

Miss Chang has collaborated closely with Giuseppe Sinopoli, Lorin Maazel, Antonio Pappano, Leonard Slatkin, Charles Dutoit, Herbert Blomstedt, Mariss Jansons, Riccardo Muti, Christoph Eschenbach, James Conlon, and Mstislav Rostropovich.

In recent seasons, Miss Chang has also successfully collaborated with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphony, the London Symphony, the Orchestre de Paris, the La Scala Philharmonic of Milan, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra of Rome, the Boston Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France, the Maggio Musicale Orchestra in Florence, the Israel Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony in Tokyo, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Han-Na Chang has studied privately with both Mischa Maisky and Mstislav Rostropovich. She is continuing her academic studies in philosophy at Harvard University.
