Han Suk-kyu (born November 3, 1964 in Seoul) is a South Korean actor. He started his career as a voice actor, before moving on to television and later film. He made his television debut in 1990, in the MBC campus drama Our Paradise (hangul: 우리들의 천국 ; revised: Urideurui cheon-guk ; McCune-Reischauer: Uridŭrŭi ch'ŏn'guk ). Before the end of the 20th century, he had cemented his place as a popular and award-winning Korean actor for films such as Green Fish, No. 3, Christmas in August and Shiri.
During the peak of his popularity, he reportedly got all the best scripts in Chungmuro, and advocated infusion of new writers through the annual "Makdong" script contest, named after his character in Green Fish.
Due to overwork and exhaustion, he took an extended hiatus at the turn of the century. This would mark a change in his popularity as "Box Office Certified Check", as well as make way for other emerging talents. Notable roles he declined include: Peppermint Candy, Shiri sequel, the father in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, North Korean villain in Die Another Day, and Andy Lau's friend/foe in Fulltime Killer.
Choi Min-sik, a friend and fellow alumnus of Dongguk University, credits him for landing the roles in No. 3 and Shiri, which reversed a slump into a career now famed for Oldboy. He is also a mentor to Gam Wu-seong, coaching the latter's enunciation for Marriage is a Crazy Thing.
Other performers who consider themselves influenced, by Han's intricate yet precise minimalism, are: Kim Ju-hyeok (Blue Swallow), Kim Ji-su (This Charming Girl), Kim Hye-su, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, Rain, Kim Dae-woo (writer of The Foul King, Untold Scandal), and Lee Sung-jae (Barking Dogs Never Bite). Al Pacino, Ken Takakura, Shohei Imamura and Hayao Miyazaki are among Han's own favorites.
Known for preferring new directors over established names, he is a total family man (which Song Kang-ho claimed prevents them from carousing together), collects Japanese animation (especially by Studio Ghibli), and makes a ritual of viewing The Godfather trilogy every year.
