[edit] Synopsis

The TV serial focuses on the ancient Chinese folk legend of the romance of the Weaving Maiden and the Cowherd, transplanting it into modern day Singapore. According to legend, the Weaving Maiden and the Cowherd were allowed to meet only once a year on the magpie bridge. At the advice of one of these magpies, the two decided to elope, but were captured and tried in the Celestial Court. The jury decided to make the two experience the rigours of mortal life once again as punishment. The Erlang deity and Wu Gang are also sent down to serve as guardians for the duo. The Weaving Maiden and the Cowherd are reincarnated with opposite fortunes, both born on the 7th day of the 7th Month, though both are eventually orphaned. The Weaving Maiden takes the name of Tianqin, becoming a successful fashion desginer. On the other hand, the Cowherd, named Tianying, becomes a milk delivery boy. Both have multiple chances to meet, but most are coincidentally bypassed. Their initial meetings backfire as well, but the two eventually grow to love each other and fulfill their destiny. The other celestial gods, including the Queen Mother herself, also choose to become reincarnated as mortals. While the Queen Mother and her side constantly attempted to make the two meet to fulfill destiny once again, the Erlang Deity decided to avoid the meeting as much as possible. Other characters in Chinese mythology, included Pigsy, Chang'e and the Celestial Dog, were also featured. Unfortunately, Sun Wukong wasn't featured in the show, but was only referenced by Pigsy as being the one who played a trick on Pigsy and Chang'e, causing them to be arrested and reincarnated as mortals. The show had many scenes which intended to poke laughter at the audience, which include featuring deities, celestial heaven and hell in modern day settings, and also gags like references to the Terminator and Men In Black.

[edit] Viewership

Since its debut, this drama's viewership ratings have been dipping at an alarming rate, recording one of the lowest viewership rates since Year 2006. This is due to many reasons (see Criticism section).

[edit] Criticism

This drama has been deemed by many Singaporeans as one of the worst dramas produced by MediaCorp so far, some saying it to be worse than even Portrait of Home, and some saying that it is still the reverse instead. This show had received the most complaints from the audience of all the Singapore series since Year 2002. The reasons include:

  • Copying of content: Some had criticized this show's scriptwriters for copying part of the content and storyline of a Hong Kong drama series, A King of Yesterday and Tomorrow.
  • Too many (More than 10) obscene scenes. (Including Elvin Ng, San Yow, Zhang Yao Dong, Bryan Wong and MC King stripping naked (private parts covered up)/to their boxers.)
  • Confusing storyline. Many people could not understand what this show's content was about. Like the deities' time travel, reincarnation and so on.
  • Cast's acting was below expectations. A possible reason for that was that actors/actresses did not treat the show seriously, and thus not putting their best in their acting.
  • The show was seen as a taboo series. As the drama was telecast during the Lunar New Year period, many Chinese are superstitious and do not want to see things that would bring them bad luck. Instead, this drama showed many of the cast in hell and some of them dying.
  • Poor transition from serious to funny scenes. The settings of the show was deemed by many to be already ridiculous, and the show yet had scenes which intended to be serious. Example: The breakup scene between the reincarnated Cowherd and Weaving Maid.
  • And finally, the main reason was that the show tried to be refreshing but failed to. For instance, the references to The Terminator and Men in Black, and the scenes of the deities' progression to modern times were intended to be funny, but ended up lame.
