Harold R. Gross

Harold Royce Gross (June 30, 1899 - September 22, 1987) was a United States Representative from Iowa. He was born in Arispe, Union County, Iowa. He was educated in the rural schools. He served with the First Iowa Field Artillery in the Mexican border campaign in 1916. During the First World War he served in the United States Army with overseas service from 1917-1919. After the war, he attended Iowa State College and the University of Missouri School of Journalism at Columbia. He was a newspaper reporter and editor for various newspapers from 1921-1935. He was a radio news commentator from 1935-1948.
Gross was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1968. He was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-first and to the twelve succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949 -January 3, 1975). Representative Gross was well known opposition to wasteful "pork barrel" spending during his terms in congress. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1974 to the Ninety-fourth Congress. He was a resident of Arlington, Virginia until his death in Washington, D.C., on September 22, 1987. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
