Hawthorn Townline Elementary School serves approximately 850 students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade in Hawthorn Community Consolidated School District 73 in Vernon Hills, Illinois. A relatively new school, Townline Elementary opened its doors to students and faculty in the fall of 2004.
Townline Elementary is guided by the International Baccalaureate (IBO) and their IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). This comprehensive Kindergarten through fifth grade program focuses on the student's growth, as a whole. Children are instructed on character development as well as their intellectual development.
At Townline, students have the unique opportunity to participate in the Dual Language program. This K-5 program aims to celebrate the learning of the English and Spanish languages. Instruction is given in both languages, however, the ratio of Spanish and English varies from grade to grade. The Dual Language program fits perfectly with the IBO philosophy and situates Townline at the forefront as an international school.
In addition to IBO, Townline Elementary School facilitates learning through the use of the Bernstein Artful Learning model. Created in 1992, this teaching model uses the arts (dance, art, music, theatre) to enhance student learning in the classroom. Through the four steps of Experiencing, Inquiring, Creating, and Reflecting on masterworks and their own artwork students gain a broader, more comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.
