Haymarket Theatre (Leicester)

The Haymarket Theatre is a theatre in Leicester, England, based in the Haymarket Centre on Belgrave Gate in Leicester City Centre. It is due to close in 2006 or 2007 along with the Phoenix Arts centre when the new performing arts centre opens.
The venue closed briefly from 2003 to 2004 due to financial problems.
Leicester Haymarket Theatre announced its final programme of events, which ends with the venue's closure in 28 January 2007.
The last production isThe Wizard of Oz, featuring Helena Blackman runner-up from the BBC’s TV show ‘How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?’ as Dorothy and Ceri Dupree from ‘Hot Stuff’ as the Wicked Witch of the West.
The new 1,200-seat venue (which is currently un-named, but is known as the PAC) is under construction, will feature an impressive five-storey open-plan foyer, two theatres, cafe, three bars, dance and recording studios and two rehearsal spaces. It is due to open in 2008 - however it has already suffered numerous increases in cost and several delays. Originally a £28m build, it has already risen to over £53m.
Sarah Belgard has been the Manager for over 16 years and was made redundant in January 2007. There were over 50 Ushers who loved to work at the theatre including Mushtaq Patas. Patas,a student said "it was one of the best jobs". The staff are looking forward to the new theatre.
