In the UK private hearing aids can only be prescribed by an R.H.A.D. which stands for Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser. The sale of hearing aids is regulated by the H.A.C. or Hearing Aid Council. Typically a person would register with the H.A.C. as a trainee and then attend a six month course completing a theory examination consisting of several papers after 3 months and then a 12 station OSPE 3 months after that.
If successful at exam the trainee becomes a pre-registered hearing aid dispenser and must describe themselves as such in dealings with the public. A six month pre-registered period is completed by filling in a log book that records 850 hours of dispensing activity. Once completed the pre-registered dispenser can apply to become an R.H.A.D.
