Sam Phillips wasn't the producer of Heartbreak Hotel - the song was not recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis. It was recorded, post RCA-signing, in Nashville, on Jan 10 1956, with Steve Sholes (the man who signed him to RCA) nominally producing, with Chet Atkins actually producing. This is part of the reason it sounds so unique - the RCA guys didn't know about the tape-echo Sam Phillips had been using in recording Elvis. In an attempt to capture that Sun Studio echo, they used a mass of reverb, and a hallway-as-a-echo-chamber.
