[edit] Character history

Hector of House Ostia is a young lord who is a good friend of Eliwood since childhood, having met in a Lycian ceremony that renewed the vows related to the Lycian League. Thanks to this, he decides to help Eliwood with his quest to find his father. Hector's parents died of natural causes, and his older brother, Uther, is the current lord of Ostia. It is also revealed in Fuuin no Tsurugi that he has a half-brother, who is the lord of another Lycian country.

This bold, reckless, tactless though well-intentioned and valiant axe fighter sets out to help his friend in search of his father Elbert, along with a few Ostian colleagues (the knight Oswin, the spy/thief Matthew and the cleric Serra), and the beloved princess of Caelin, Lyndis. Behind the scenes, however, there is terrible news concerning his brother Uther, his health has deteriorated progressively over the years, and as Hector is fighting the Black Fang, he's practically in the verge of death.

Hector eventually acquires the Legendary Axe of Lightning, Armads (also referred to as Almace), used by the legendary Durban, who also referred to himself by his axe's name. Hector's defense is further increased by 5 points when equipped with Armads. Hector is the only unit able to use the Armads, which is especially strong against the Fire Dragon, Wyvern Riders, and Wyvern Lords, the internal game logic being that those are all 'Dragon' type units and therefore the legendary weapons are especially strong against them.

Hector also appears in Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals, but eventually he dies from injuries caused by King Zephiel. His daughter, the Mage Lilina, is one of the playable characters in the game.

[edit] Relationships

If Hector gets an A support with either the Lord Lyn or either of the Pegasus Knight Sisters Florina and Farina, one of them will marry him and become the mother of Lilina, but she'll pass away some years before Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals.

Many players believe that it is more logical that Farina is Lilina's mother since she only appears on Hector's route, but others argue that Lilina has Florina's personality, as well as her elemental affinity. And yet, playing Hector's quest unlocks many scenes between he and Lyn that werent' featured in Eliwood's quest; while a romance between them is never explicitly stated, the game makes it seem likely. Since Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken's ending is open-ended and Lilina's mother has not been revealed in Sword of Seals, this has been a subject of debate for fans.

[edit] Hector as a unit

Hector's forte lies in physical strength and durability. As an axe fighter, he is able to deal heavy amounts of damage, and his defense rating makes him able to take an immense amount of punishment. Surprisingly, he is also quite fast for an armoured unit. He is also not as lucky as the other two lords, but this is often insignificant due to his toughness.

In Fuuin no Tsurugi, Hector is unlockable in Trial Maps after finishing the game several times, with the General class specializing in axes. However, he is nowhere as good as his young self in Rekka no Ken (as opposed to Eliwood, who wasn't as strong in Rekka no Ken, but is regarded better than Hector in Fuuin no Tsurugi).

Hector is counted as one of the strongest Lords of Fire Emblem, alongside Sigurd from Genealogy of Holy War, Ephraim from The Sacred Stones and Ike from Path of Radiance.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Rekka no Ken (Blazing Sword), when Hector talks with Eliwood in their support conversations he explains a dream to him "a long-past memory". In the dream, Hector mentions a big blue-haired man who is carrying a blue-haired little girl on his shoulders as they talk. Eliwood gets the idea that the big-man with blue mustache is Hector and that the girl is perhaps Hector's daughter. Then Hector explains that the girl walks away with a red-haired boy; immediately, Hector notices that the boy is a Pheraen, possibly Eliwood's son, and is not really pleased about the future vision because he doesn’t accept the fact that his "possible" daughter could get married to Eliwood's son. Ironically, this "vision of the future" is the "best ending" of Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals, which is the marriage of Eliwood's son Roy & Hector's daughter Lilina.
  • Also in Rekka no Ken, when acquiring Armads, Hector was warned by Durban that the cost of wielding the axe is that the former will die in battle, not in peace. Hector brushed the warning off as Nergal's threat was much more pressing at the moment, but the warning comes true in Fuuin no Tsurugi, where Hector died in the battle wounds caused by Zephiel.
Spoilers end here.
