Hello Zepp

Hello Zepp was a song composed by Charlie Clouser for the original Saw film, but was re-used heavily throughout the following films in the Saw trilogy, usually played when revealing a major plot twist.

[edit] Basis & Naming
When the song was first composed, James Wan, the director of Saw, had instructed Charlie Clouser to produced a haunting, dramatic song that James wanted to use for the main twist of the first film. Charlie produced the song and James fell in love with it. It was applied to first film, and was named after the tape to Zep Hindle, another one of Jigsaw's victims.

The song was used in Saw when the identity of the Jigsaw Killer was finally revealed to be John Kramer, the cancer patient, instead of Zep Hindle who had originally thought to be due to his own test. The song played when Adam Faulkner began to play Zep's tape, which the first words of were "Hello, Mr. Hindle. Or as they called you around the hospital: Zep."

When Darren Lynn Bousman was signed on to direct Saw II, Leigh Whannell, the original screenwriter for Saw who played Adam Faulkner, rewrote Darren's original script, and included another major plot twist that Darren and James decided "Hello Zepp" should be applied to. The song was also remixed under the new title of "Don't Forget the Rules". The song actually appears twice in Saw II. The original version of the song played when Xavier cornered Amanda Young and Daniel Matthews in the bathroom from the original movie, and began to cut the back of his neck off for part of the combination to the safe upstairs. The remix played when Amanda revealed to Detective Eric Matthews that she had become Jigsaw's apprentice.

In Saw III, it played twice, the first time being when Amanda knocked on the door of the bathroom. The second time it played was when Jeff Reinhart cut Jigsaw's throat with a buzzsaw - only to learn that Jigsaw had hidden his daughter, and that she only has a limited air supply. All the doors to the medical room then locked, trapping Jeff inside with his wife, Dr. Lynn Denlon. The explosive collar on Lynn's neck then exploded, and she died, leaving Jeff screaming inside what had become his tomb, with only the company of three corpses - Amanda's, Jigsaw's and Lynn's - and the knowledge that his daughter was taken from him. At that point, "Hello Zepp", finished just before the credits rolled up.
However, another remix of "Hello Zepp", entitled "The Shithole Theme", played during Amanda's first flashback in the Saw bathroom, set just minutes before the original Saw films, where she and Jigsaw prepared to 'start their game' with Adam Faulkner and Lawrence Gordon. The song was named "The Shithole Theme" due to Adam's line"I went to my shithole apartment and woke up in an actual shithole".And, another remix was played throughout the end of the movie; when Jeff kills Jigsaw to find out that Jigsaw has his daughter. This remix is called "The Final Test."

The theme was also used in the Déjà Vu trailer which started playing in theatres around the time when Saw III came out.

The theme was used in the film United 93 during the crash of the doomed airplane.

- Although the title of the song lists the character's name as "Zepp", the credits of Saw spell it as "Zep".
