Herschel Lynn Greer (1906-1976, born in Dickson County, Tennessee), was a prominent Nashville businessman and a major force behind the effort to keep a professional baseball team in Nashville in the mid-1900s. He helped to organize the company Vols Inc., and served as its president. Vols Inc. was formed for the purpose of keeping the Nashville Vols in Nashville, and was successful for several years.
The Southern Association League collapsed in 1961, and as a result the Vols did not play in 1962. In 1963 the Vols played one season in the Southern Atlantic League. This was the last year that professional baseball was played at the Sulphur Dell stadium, the home of the Nashville Vols.
Greer passed away in 1976. Two years later, in 1978, the home of the Nashville Sounds baseball team was named "Herschel Greer Stadium."
