This article was proposed for deletion, citing non-notability per WP:SOFTWARE. I disagree with the proposal, though it can always be put through an AfD. I offer the following reasons why the article should stay, or alternately be merged into a larger article covering software like this.
- WP:SOFTWARE is not a policy - it is currently a proposal only, with plenty of active discussion of its own.
- HighGrow is freeware, far from the threshold of advertising and spam, and is widely distributed (mostly by cannabis fan sites).
- HighGrow is popular. It may not be the subject of media coverage, but thousands of small-time pot heads use it and talk about it online, in several languages, and this is clearly evident with just a Google search. Even the current revision of WP:SOFTWARE says this is notable enough for at least a mention merged into a parent article (a merge I support if there is such an article).
- HighGrow is not the first program like this. For example, see Dope Wars. Dope Wars is over 20 years old, yet has the same sort of coverage - a fan base of numerous small-time enthusiasts that yield tons of search results but no significant media coverage.
- Games like this and Dope Wars are far from mainstream but notable because they are adopted by advocates of drug decriminalization more for the purpose of making a point, rather than competing with the games sold at retail. They will never be reviewed as "games" in the traditional sense, but there's enough people amused by them that "non-notable" hardly applies. This could alternately mean that Dope Wars should be deleted or merged into a larger article.
- While I recognize each Wikipedia language has its own community and its own consensus, the German-language de:HighGrow article is even more detailed than this, and no one is proposing to delete it there.
I'm not against putting this article through an AfD if others feel it's appropriate, but I feel the program has enough vocal users to bring it past the threshold of non-notability. Reswobslc 02:25, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oki doki, no problem. I'm not convinced about it's notability (in terms of what's presented in the article); perhaps you could add something to assert it's popularity. I can't read german, but I can't see any independent references on de:HighGrow and it's only been around since January, so it wouldn't surprise me if that is prod'd at some point (WP:V is a policy rather than a guideline after all).
- I might address Dope Wars at some point, because if nothing else it certainly needs a tidy up.
