Hishida Shunso

Hishida Shunso (菱田春草 b. 21 September 1874, d. 16 September 1911) was a Japanese painter from the Meiji period specializing in the nihonga style of watercolour painting. One of Okakura Tenshin's pupils along with Yokoyama Taikan and Shimomura Kanzan, he played a role in the Meiji era innovation of nihonga.

Hishida was born in 1874 in Iida in Nagano prefecture, with the original first name of Miyoji (三男治). In 1890 he enrolled at the Tokyo Art School (now the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music). Shunso was one year junior to his colleagues Taikan and Kanzan; his teacher was Hashimoto Gaho. Shunso, Taikan and Kanzan were heavily influenced by Okakura Tenshin during their time at Tokyo art school.
