The House of the Faun is the largest private residence to be discovered in the ruins of Pompeii. It is named for a statue of a dancing faun in its impluvium. The house has an area of exactly 2865m².
It is perhaps best known for the Alexander Mosaic, a large mosaic that depicts a battle between the armies of Alexander the Great and Darius III of Persia. The entrance is decorated by the Latin message "HAVE"meaning welcome.
