Houston County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created on May 15, 1821. It is part of the Warner Robins, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the population is 110,765. Explosive growth in the county is evident, with the Census 2005 estimates showing a population of 126,163 [1]. This makes Houston County the fastest growing county in Georgia not within Atlanta's CSA. Its county seat is Perry, Georgia6.
The county is named not after the familiar Texas military hero but rather after Georgia governor John Houstoun (who used that spelling during his lifetime). The county's name is pronounced house-ton, not Hugh-stun like the Texas city of Houston.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 984 km² (380 mi²). 976 km² (377 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it (0.81%) is water.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 110,765 people, 40,911 households, and 30,233 families residing in the county. The population density was 114/km² (294/mi²). There were 44,509 housing units at an average density of 46/km² (118/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 70.57% White, 24.76% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.59% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 3.04% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 40,911 households out of which 38.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% were married couples living together, 14.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% were non-families. 22.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the county the population was spread out with 28.20% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 31.80% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $43,638, and the median income for a family was $50,384. Males had a median income of $36,031 versus $25,537 for females. The per capita income for the county was $19,515. About 8.40% of families and 10.20% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.30% of those under age 18 and 9.50% of those age 65 or over.
