[edit] New Disussion
I ask this partially assuming that "an anonymous IP address poster" will be able to address the issue, but also because I find the current wording a bit...wordy. Would it be fair to list Moore as McCoy's lawyer/attorney, or is it just power of attorney belonging to Moore as a layman? Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 04:52, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
- My understanding based on e-mails I've received, so unfortunately those can't be directly referenced in the article, is that it was a limited "power of attorney belonging to Moore as a layman". There is also this and this. Johntex\talk 16:39, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Any reference to the Houston McCoy scoutleader being the same guy? Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 00:33, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Sherurcij. I have received extensive e-mails from the person claiming to be Monika McCoy. Although there is always room for some doubt, I do believe her to be who she claims to be. She has e-mailed me things (such as family photos) in order to establish her identity privately. She has confirmed that the scout leader and her father are the same person. I consider it to be defensible to include the information based upon her personal communication in an effort to balance out this biography of a living person. I understand the issue of personal communciation to be a tricky area, so please let me know if you disagree and we can discuss further. Johntex\talk 17:43, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Acutally, John Moore's website also has the claim.[1] Johntex\talk 17:45, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- No worries, I wasn't worried about the credibility really, just wanted to make sure whoever added it hadn't just googled "Houston McCoy" and found another guy with the same name. If Monika/Houston/JohnMoore say he was the scoutleader, that's good enough for me. Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 20:57, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Hello, I was trying to put an external link in the external link section but the links are all in the main section. Can anyone fix this? I'm not familiar enough. Thanks! Also, the WOIA link is only about the other officer Martinez ansd also on his page. Should that be removed or the two pages merged to reduce the confusion?2HOT2 22:44, 19 October 2006 (UTC)2
- Hi, use this link to edit the External Links :) Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 23:40, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] I made a rather substantial edit
Based on further reflection and discussions with some of the principal parties in this story, I have made some edits to essentially eliminate all the stuff about John Moore as being completely irrelevant to the story we want to tell. If you are familiar with the history of this article, John Moore had a rather unpleasant (for him, and for us) set of interactions with Wikipedia. In the process, I believe that Moore's own role in the story was blown out of proportion.
The essentials of the story of Houston McCoy are now in the article, and given appropriate weight. Because Moore was himself controversial within Wikipedia, I believe that the parts of the story relating to Moore were given far too much weight, leading to a weak overall biography. The new version is stronger because it tells the reader what they want to know (i.e. about Houston McCoy) without a lot of needless detail about Moore and blah blah blah about the details of the worker's compensation case.
I am making this edit as an ordinary editor, this is not a declaration from on high, nor a directive from the foundation. I hope, though, that editors who respect that this article has been the subject of a rather contentious edit dispute in the past, will pay careful heed to why I have made these edits, and please discuss it with me at some length before we make further changes to the article, if any.
I think that with this set of edits, this long troublesome article will be acceptable to all parties.--Jimbo Wales 21:54, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- The only odd part I see that I'm going to Be Bold and edit, is the fact you mention the 1975 film and McCoy's reaction to it, after it's already been covered in a paragraph of its own. On a sidenote, I would also support re-adding the value of the Worker's Compensation sought ($2,100) as it lends context to this not being a multi-million dollar lawsuit or anything, just simple Workers Comp. Agreed, and done. I may have some more edits to make after talking by email some more with relevant parties, so stay tuned, help is appreciated. :)--Jimbo Wales 15:24, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
