Howard F. Barrett
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Howard Franklin Barrett (October 1, 1911 - March 6, 2007) was a Lubbock, Texas, businessman and farmer-rancher who was instrumental in developing and enhancing several breeds of cattle.
Barrett was born in Paris, the seat of Lamar County, in northeastern Texas. The family moved thereafter to the smaller mostly farming community of Hamlin in west Texas on the boundaries of Fisher and Jones counties. Barrett graduated from Hamlin High School in 1929. He later graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington (then "North Texas Agricultural College") with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
In 1941, Barrett and his brother, the late Jack Barrett, opened Barrett's Automotive in Lubbock. Thereafter, he was sent to France during World War II as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
On returning from the military, Barrett operated and expanded Barrett's Automotive into a chain of five stores, which he sold in 1978. He then farmed and ranched in the South Plains of Texas and in Oklahoma. He did numerous experiments and innovations with registered beef cattle. In his spare time, Barrett was an avid golfer.
In 1943, Barrett married the former Alice Marie Famuliner (September 5, 1912 - February 16, 2000). The Barretts adopted two children who survived them: William H. "Bill" Barrett (born ca. 1951 and adopted in 1952) and Susan Barrett (adopted 1953). There were also four granddaughters and one great-grandson.
His obituary describes him as a "disciplined example" of what the former NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw called "the greatest generation." Barrett was "self-made, unassuming, and self- deprecating; there was no one in trouble he would not help, and no one but God whom he feared." Barrett was Methodist. Services were held on March 9, 2007, in the Bowman Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, with Barrett's nephew, the Reverend Arville McClain, officiating. Burial was in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. The family suggested memorials to the American Cancer Society, 3411 - 73rd. St., Lubbock, TX 79423.
