Hunterville, New Zealand

Hunterville is a small community in the Rangitikei region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 50 kilometres north of Palmerston North, 35 kms or so South of Mangaweka, and 5 kilometres west of the Rangitikei River. It has a population (2001 census) of 507. Hunterville is famous for its statue of the Huntaway, a unique sheep-herding dog, in that it uses its voice to drive the sheep. Hunterville was founded in 1884 by a merchant named George Hunter. It straddles the state highway as well as the main trunk railway in the foothills forming the gateway to the Central Plateau. Jul 14, 2006
