[edit] Rifles
Rifles are generally used for killing big-game species. Some, such as the .22, are used for small-game species.
[edit] Single shot weapons
Single-shot weapons fall into three categories:
- Falling-block action
- Break-barrel action
- Single-shot bolt action
Single-shot weapons have some advantages over other rifles: they are cheap, and their silent action does not scare away game.
[edit] Double-shot weapons
Double-shot rifles are best for hunting boar, bears, and other dangerous game species. They are generally reliable, fast, and powerful. Double-shot weapons are usually quite expensive.
[edit] Other action types
- Bolt-action weapons are rugged and reliable, but slow.
- Lever-action guns are fast and easier to use than other actions. They are embedded into American culture.[citation needed]
- Pump-action weapons are fast, but not strong and reliable.
- Semi-automatic guns are fast, like a pump action, but not reliable.

[edit] Shotguns
Shotguns are used mainly for hunting small game, but they can be used for big game when loaded with buckshot or a slug. The following are popular shotgun actions:
- Break-barrel action
- Pump action
