Az amerikai neo-soul/rnb énekesnő először 14 évesen került mikrofonközelbe, azóta hatalmas sikereket tudhat magáénak saját dalaival, a The Roots-szal való együttműködésével és a Blues Brothersben kapott szerepével. Példaképei közt található Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye és mindenkori kedvence, Chaka Khan. A nemrégiben megjelent Before The Music Dies dokumentumfilmben a mai, halálán lévő zenei életről beszél.
