"I Turn to You" is the third single from Christina Aguilera's debut album, Christina Aguilera. Released in the spring of 2000, the single peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, becoming Aguilera's 3rd Top 10 hit. The single also peaked at #19 in the UK and #40 in Australia. The single is most known for its powerful vocal performance; previously critics had begun to doubt Aguilera's vocal strength after releasing several uptempo singles which shifted focus from her vocals to the production of the song; with the release of "I Turn to You", she proved that her vocal strength was no trick as the song's simplistic structure allowed her to show off her vocal chops; in this song Aguilera even hits a F5 in a full chest voice.

[edit] Song information
"I Turn to You" was penned by Diane Warren and produced by Guy Roche. Although the song became popular when sung by Aguilera, the single is actually a cover; it was originally sung by All-4-One for the Space Jam soundtrack. Unlike her two previous single releases, the song was not released in a remixed or re-recorded form. However, like the two previous single releases, the single was released in a different form than the album version; the version promoted was a radio edit which got rid of the song's lengthy surreal rain sequence.
In her first major ballad released as a single, Aguilera recounts a tale of someone who helps her find the proverbial light in the rain when she is lost losing ground. To reaffirm how much Miss Aguilera needs this person in her life, she states, "For a shield, from the storm, For a friend..for a love to keep me safe and warm, I turn to you". It is often felt that the single is written with the theme of thanking a parent figure (as evidented by the song's music video.) However, due to the song's universally application of theme, it can refer to a friend, a sibling, a lover, a grandparent, etc.
The song was re-written in Spanish (Titled "Por Siempre Tú") for Aguilera's album Mi Reflejo.
[edit] Chart success
Following the huge #1 successes of Aguilera's two previous major singles, "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants", there was obviously pressure for "I Turn to You" to become her third consecutive chart-topper. It didn't, but still became a strong top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and another #1 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales; however, for an Aguilera single at the time, it was a moderate flop on the Hot 100 Airplay, managing to go only top twenty. The single also became her first to miss the top ten on Top 40 radio, peaking at #11. It did, however, become a top five hit on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Although a song peaking at #3 is not bad for any artist, fans and the bosses of Aguilera expressed relative disappointment as the single had a relatively expansive promotional campaign for its CD Single (which are usually not promoted like this). The single was advertised to prospective buyers as enticing by containing a radio edit of the album version, a previously unreleased Spanish version, an Enhanced CD portion that contained special features such as the song's music video, and an exclusive decal not sold in stores. In addition the song also was released in a special case.
As the song was a hit on the Hot 100 Singles Sales, its sales power cannot be denied, but the hope of the heavily promoted single was that sales would help make the single reach #1, and help Aguilera beat Mariah Carey's record of most consecutive #1 singles starting from a debut album. Critics argue that Aguilera would not have broken the record even if this single and the next three went to #1, as the Christmas single, "The Christmas Song" did not hit #1. However, critics of Billboard point out that "The Christmas Song" could be given "immunity", as songs that are seasonal are often not counted in runs of #1 singles. At the same time, other critics point out that this "immunity" is not a heavily enforced rule of Billboard, and is only recognized by a few editors, but is not really an official policy. Whichever policy can take precedence, "I Turn To You" nevertheless broke Aguilera's bid to break Carey's record (which still stands to this day as of this writing).
Internationally, the same trend of the single performing weaker on the charts than her previous two was shown as the song failed to even reach the top-forty in most countries.
