Ian Gallagher is a fictional character in the Channel 4 drama Shameless, played by Gerard Kearns. He was 15 at the beginning of the first series (2004) and is the third oldest of the Gallagher siblings (and the second oldest boy). Ian was believed to be Frank's second son until a trip to the hospital for Liam revealed that Ian's blood group was different from Frank's, leading to the discovery of Gary Bennett being his real father. Ian is also gay, having various relationships with usually older men throughout the run of the programme, although Kash has been his only long-term boyfriend. However, he had sex with a girl on the run from the Maguire family in the fourth series, bringing his sense of sexual identity into disarray.
Ian came out to his brother Lip in the first episode of the first series (inadvertently), and then to sister Fiona in the sixth episode of the second series. He came out to Debbie and Carl in the seventh episode of the fourth series, though they admitted they had already guessed.
