Ibar

Ibar is a Basque word and a linguistic root (i)bar meaning 'valley'.
It explains many place names as:
and words characteristic of the Aquitano-Iberic area as:
- barro 'mud',
- barranco 'torrent', 'gully',
- barta 'damp plain'.
The Basque words:
- barren, barne 'lower place',
- ibai 'river' < ibarre,
and the linguistic root:
- barka 'lower place'
are related.
This root should not be mistaken for the root barr- 'wooded relief'.
