Ida (restaurant)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ida is a restaurant at Ida Aalbergin tie 1, Pohjois-Haaga, Helsinki, Finland.
The restaurant has two floors. The second floor houses the main restaurant, which is open every day at normal opening hours. The restaurant has a separate cabinet area for special situations such as birthday parties or meetings, and there is a scheduled program for every day of the week, mainly involving darts and billiards.
At the ground floor is a public sauna. Unlike the main restaurant, the sauna has to be reserved in advance, usually for private parties, which may be inclusive or exclusive. The sauna floor also includes a swimming pool and a lounge room with a separate bar, tended by the restaurant staff.
Unlike most public saunas in Finland, Ida does not have separate dressing rooms or sauna rooms for men and women. Instead, men and women have to take separate turns to the sauna, or have a unisex sauna.
Ida is especially popular among the students at the University of Helsinki, and student organisations hold parties there approximately once per month. A famous tradition among the students is the "Ida approbatur", where a student (usually a man, but women can do it too) has to go outside, and run around the entire restaurant, completely naked.
