Ikšķile was center of ancient Livonia, and is also known by the German name of Üxküll.
Meinhard, known from the "Chronicle of Henry of Livonia" was the first bishop of Üxküll.
In 1197 Berthold, a Cistercian abbot of Loccum, was made the second bishop of Üxküll. Those days the city was the center of the upcoming crusading activities in the Livonian area. Bishop Berthold was killed by the Livs in battle, during his life he moved the bishopric chair to Riga.
