[edit] Post Office
Need confirmation on this. Each postal code represent a post office. There is only one post office in each postal code area. There are no private post offices which provides services of register mail or collect mails. The mail boxes are dome shaped boxes placed on the side of a street. Npindia 18:34, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think so. Each postcode may not necessarily mean there is only one post office in that area. And, There may be some post offices which handle only telegraphs.-- Chez (Discuss / Email) • 04:13, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
- 'Each postal code represent a post office'- Almost in all cases. But in certain cases there are something called 'extention' post offices under the same postal code. For example a tiny postoffice within a college campus or the likes for the convinence of the users. You would find such multiple postoffice under the same postal code more in a city location than say in a village. But this is not a norm.
- 'Private post office' - Well, there are many. If you consider the likes of DHL, UPS, Bluedart etc. But then according to some (funny) Indian the 'personal letters' should be sent only through the state run post office! I mean the private 'couries' are only meant for sending the 'documents' and the likes.
- 'dome shaped boxes'- Not always! The newer ones are mostly box time. But I love the dome type ones. It go well with the charector of the postal department.

[edit] Proposal
Here is a proposal for the structure of the article:
- History
- Governance and organization (including monopoly status)
- Types of postal facilities/Hierarchy
- Major postal services
- Non-postal services
- Postage stamps
This is largely based on the articles Royal Mail and United States Postal Service. Please comment.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:04, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Org. Chart
I am tempted to upload this but am not sure about copyright status. An image from a government website could be copyright, but what about a chart like this? - Aksi_great (talk) 19:50, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] PIN Code?
What are PIN codes? They appear to be analogous to ZIP codes, and there's a few articles listing PIN Codes for cities or regions in India. But what are the codes? There's no "PIN Codes" article. -- Mikeblas 15:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- See Postal Index Number and Postal code. - Ganeshk (talk) 23:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks! I see you also added a PIN Codes redirect, which is very helpful. -- Mikeblas 00:45, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
