From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
InformationalAnarchist is a Canadian with a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering from Queen's University at Kingston. As of June 2005, he is a newbie (or n00b in his native dialect of 1337) to the Wikipedia community of contributors, though a reader and fan since 2004.
The nickname, InformationalAnarchist, should not be confused with the term "wiki-anarchist" in that he does not consider Wikipedia to be an anarchy and that he does not wish it to become one. "Informational Anarchy" is, instead, a reference to his particular beliefs about information, culture and ideas - that ideas should be free and that this extends to philosophy, art and popular culture. He believes that this ideal is shared by most of the Wikimedia community becase the Wikimedia and Open Source communities so heavily influenced its formation. Concisely, InformationalAnarchist stands for the idea that information and culture should be free from power structures that would seek to use control of information and culture to control the thoughts of the people.
Despite the radical and Anarchist Movement-aligned connotations of his name, InformationalAnarchist does not consider himself to be an Anarchist in general. Indeed, he believes that the concept of "Informational Anarchy" is not commonly known or even recognized as being a real thing! Contrary to being radical or punk as the name would imply, InformationalAnarchist has been described by acquaintances as somewhat conservative in his demeanour. His biggest challenge as a n00b may be properly fulfilling the virtue of boldness preferred in Wikipedians.
