Quote from page: "In previous years, the bootblacks were allowed to shine boots and collect tickets at all times during the weekend. Since 2001, the bootblack contestants have established a gentlemen's agreement at the start of the weekend that they will not shine boots or accept ballots except during the established competition hours. This agreement was conceived to give the contestants the freedom to take time to enjoy the weekend without feeling the pressure to always be bootblacking."
This is, at best, only partially true. In the two years I competed several candidates (generally the more physically attractive) were invited to private parties where they could black boots without competition. (It was also rumored that they engaged in other activities in exchange for votes, this is of course unsubstantiated.) Also, in the past bootblacks brought their own equipment (sometimes very elaborate) and there was much competition for choice locations. The bootblacks are now in a designated area and (I am informed) basic supplies are provided by IML.Saxophobia 01:18, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
