Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?

Why would the Nintendo web browsers have to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection? Are we sure this isn't just some confusion of terms? The name Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection refers specifically to the Xbox Live-style networking service, and doesn't just mean "a Wi-Fi connection with Nintendo hardware". Wii also has the option of Ethernet connections via a USB adaptor, but it presumably still connects to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for gaming, even though it isn't really a Wi-Fi connection. If they indeed require the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and if web browsing on Nintendo consoles goes through Nintendo servers, there are some serious privacy concerns here. Not Free

According to Nintendo's site, here, the Wii Browser will be purchased with Wii Points, which presumably are not free. Hence the browser would not be free (which makes sense... as with DVD playback, not everyone wants to browse the 'net on their TV, so it cuts costs). You are free to make those changes yourself. No need to waste time and process mentioning it on the talk page unless there's an ongoing dispute; there's too much work to be done on these articles with all the new information. Widgets

According to Opera's financial presentation for Q2 2006, the Wii browser will support widgets: "For example, Widgets will be supported in Opera 9 for Nintendo Wii and Symbian Series 60." - is that what the following sentence in the article is referring to? "Opera Software has indicated that the functionality will allow for third parties to create web applications specifically designed for the use on the Wii Browser?" -Numbnumb 20:29, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

No, it is refering to the interview (see bottom of article). Scott Hedrick (Vice President with Opera for Devices) said "Based on Opera 9 for Devices, the Wii browser will be not only able to surf the full Internet, but execute Web applications using technologies such as AJAX. In addition to the ability to use advanced services such as Google Maps, third parties could theoretically develop Web applications specifically for the Wii." IGN made a typo. 1up has a [full story] on the Wii Browser, and they state clearly it will be free for download until June 2007. They site the official Japanese page. However, since it isn't on the English page, there is no way of knowing whether or not that deal will carry over to North America. 66.75.221.6 03:41, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Release Date

Where was the release date taken from? I can't find a source that explicitly states it will be released with the system. If I'm missing something, or if I'm just being stupid by not noticing it, please feel free to insult me in any way you see fit. --68.195.25.63 22:24, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

• First of all, it is now November 19th. I have a Wii, and when I go to download the browser, it says, "We're planning to release the Internet Channel in the near future." Nintendo Sweeden

According to nintendo Sweeden, the internet channel will be available the 8th of december [2] (If you speak Sweedish it is)

The site linked to there doesn't provide a press release, link, or other citation for their information. However I think they're confusing the Internet Channel (browser) with the internet-based Weather Channel, which was confirmed for the 23rd of December some time ago. Wii Browser/Internet Channel

While I agree that "Wii Browser" is an accurate description of this feature, Nintendo's official name for it is "Internet Channel". Hmm...well, it seems to me that the Internet Channel is simply the channel on the menu that contains the Wii Browser, which would be the actual browser itself. I'd suggest further clarification.

Wii Browser → Internet Channel (Wii) — The "Internet Channel" name is the official name of this function of the console, as observed by another editor on the talk page. Not particularly controversial but the number of link changes involved, and the not-particularly-serious reason for the move, might be reason to leave the article alone Sockatume 21:02, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Release date TBA?

Just an observation. For some reason, the article states that there is an estimated release date, but there doesn't seem to be any release date stated in the box template. Is this on purpose, or just something that was overlooked? Jeri-kun 23:29, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Beta

It seems that Nintendo of Europe and Opera's press releases refer to it as a "trial version", while the Nintendo of America press release calls it a Beta version. While I really doubt it's a beta version of the software in the technical sense (there's a distinction between a limited-functionality demo version of software, as seen on PC mag covers, and a beta, for example of Firefox, which is typically somewhat bug-laden), I'm happy to leave the wording as "Beta" for the time being. Functionality list?

There should be a list that shows what the browser is capable of. So far I have found that SVG as well as RSS (and Atom) feeds work with the browser, although editing Wiki articles doesn't work (it clears the text field when editing). OptimumCoder 04:48, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

That's funny... It works fine for me... That's how I'm on now... Another thing, The listed "bug" about the 2 button is Not true... Bugs Already?

I don’t think there should be a section on bugs this early on in the browser’s life. I deleted the "One of the bugs in the software is when you click on "Set to homepage" or "Add to favorites" button, the whole thing freezes for about 10 seconds, and then goes back." statement. I have used the browser many times and never experienced this problem. I also got rid of the "Also when you press 2 (to change the view) most of the text overlaps each other, and makes it very difficult to read." statement. I even tested this out by going to Wikipedia and no such bug occurred even after performing the action several times. The only bug I experienced which had been listed was the one which happens during pop-ups. There is a good possibility that such bugs are widespread, though. But I don’t think they should be stated in Wikipedia until reports start circulating. BeefJeaunt 05:47, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

No, it doesn't support Java. Runescape is stupid anyway.

Support for free web games

I don't have a Wii, yet, so I can't test this. Could someone use the Internet Channel and surf here: http://www.gagaplay.com/jemu2/games.php Clicking a 'Play!' should launch JEmu2 Java application. Then a large number of arcade games from various sources can be played. Just wondering if this also works on the Internel Channel. If it does, that would enable us to play these games for free. The MSX games (I've tried Eggerland and Penguin adventure) are controlled by the arrow keys. Hopefully they are mapped to the D-key on the Wii remote. sorry to say this but I think we need to undo all of that guy's edits, because it sounded very bad, I dont think the article should say things like "it seems to me YouTube doesnt work, but many, many people think it works" or one-sided things like that, but maybe something like "YouTube only sometimes works on the Wii Browser, perhaps due to some flash issues"70.130.41.121 21:15, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

in my experience, YouTube works variabley - videos loaded in the "old style" YouTube player seem to work fine, while those in the shiny "new style" one don't.--Avapoet 09:02, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Alternatives?

I went ahead and removed it myself... I really don't think it's a problem because it was obselete info from before the Channels actual release.. I mean "Internet Channel leaving people wanting more"? Full Version will be released on March 30

Accrding to IGN (http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html) it says that the Full version of the Intenet Channel will be available on March 30. I'm gonna add this to the article. Munchlax 18:32, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

It seems that IGN has removed the date of the Full Version of the Opera Browser out of the list, therefore, March 30th may not be the date. I'm gonna remove March 30 at the article since we dont have evidence that will be released on the 30th. Munchlax 21:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Bookmarkes

I have noticed that the bookmarks on the Internet Channel are not live, as mentioned in this article. The picture of the book mark is not changed after you make the bookmark, the picture simply reflects the page when you DID the bookmark. Can someone please verify that, and get this article fixed? Wii Porn

First porn site dedicated for wii users so they can watch porn on the wii. The site was the first one to be released. It's predicted that many will follow wiisex.net. I guess it was a matter of time considering the huge amounts of porn that is currently out for portable devices such as the sony psp.(pspsex.net) One advantage of porn on the wii is that you can watch it from the comforts of your couch. Yeah, and they'll most likely be able to find your site by other means. As far as the link goes from here, it is irrelevent. The Wii is a web browser that is no different than a browser on a computer, or a cell phone. First, It's not my site. It's not irrelevant. The Wii webrowser is not different than a pc browser. But the wii is different from a pc. Otherwise why do you have a section for wii? You could just say it's no different from a pc in that they both play games. It plays different content. Its a different platform. I can't run have the video on my pc on my wii. I found a site that was geared towards providing wii users with porn that works on their wii interesting. Much like when the Mobile Porn industry first came out, porn sites cropped up. The sites are dedicated to those portable devices. They guaranty compatibility. Much like the new generation of wii porn. I find that to be very informative. The site is also none-profit. No ads, no affiliates. No membership. So there is nothing to spam. I feel it's just as valid as every other site on that external links list. Before I reply, may I please advise you to go at this in a civil way, and sign your posts by typing ~~~~ at the end of them? It may help you when communicating with people here at Wikipedia. If you remember, the Wii was not the first console based browser that was widely used, so the concept of viewing porn on a console is not new. in terms of Wikipedia guideline, it doesn't matter if the site makes money or not. I disagree with you 100%. You are not looking at it objectively. In fact you are using a personal opinion and passing it off as fact. Firstly there is a section talking about youtube working on wii. What is the significance of youtube playing on a browser? Does it say anything about affecting the wii? Cell phones are not the first browser neither but porn for cell phones and mobile devices will reach over 2billion dollars by 2010. There is even a section about it on this site. I guess you changed the focus of the Wii porn article to include reliable sources. In regards to YouTube, that is correct, as youtube is Flash powered. We've covered that any flash enabled site can work with the Internet Channel, so it's been deleted. Also, don't bring unrelated issues into this. That is disruption. --w^{L<speak·check·chill>}
