Iowa Highway 39 is a north-south route in Crawford and Sac counties in the west-central portion of the state. It connects U.S. Route 30 and U.S. Route 71 well to the west of those routes' junction in Carroll. As such, it helps link northwestern Iowa with the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area.

Iowa Highway 39's southern terminus is at its junction with U.S. Route 59 and Iowa Highway 141 on the western edge of Denison. This terminus is just north of 59 and 141's intersection with U.S. 30. Guide signs at that intersection direct travelers to Highway 39. [2]
The highway's northern terminus is at its junction with Iowa Highway 175 on the eastern side of Odebolt, five miles from 175's western junction with U.S. 71.[3]

Highway 39 was designated as part of the Great Renumbering of 1969 as a segment of the former Iowa Highway 4. It has not changed termini or alignment since its designation. [1]
