IronFist Chinmi is a Japanese manga series written by Takeshi Maekawa. It is centered around the story of a boy called Chinmi who learns Kung Fu through the staple manga method of fighting progressively more challenging foes.
The books were translated by Jonathan Clements and published in the UK by Bloomsbury. However, only the first 12 volumes of the manga were released.
The original manga in Japan, however, is released from volume 1 - 35 in which he encounters more difficult foes throughout his journey. In the last few volumes, he is forced to particpate in the national pugilist meet due the request of the emperor. Chinmi made several friends during the pugilist meet, such as ; Dan Dan, Master of kicking. The last opponent Chinmi was to face was his old friend, Xu Fang which he encountered in volume 7.
New IronFist Chinmi is introduced a few months later after the old series ended. It shows how he freed a city from an evil ruler. In this 1st saga, he is targeted by the ruler's personnel consisting of an army, a vicious captain and a general. Chinmi engaged the captain throughout the whole saga and had a final duel with him in volume 8. After defeating the captain, he was to engage against the general which was a much tougher foe to defeat compared to the inferior captain. Fortunately, thanks to Chinmi's agility and quick reflexes, he managed to defeat the general resulting in him falling out of the castle walls.
The princess was worried that the general might still be alive, hence, she brought a group of men to hunt the general down and kill him. Once the general was discovered, they rallied up and attempted to engage him. The general committed suicide as he did not want people to know that he was defeated by enemies weaker than him and died under his own technique. This saga ends at book 13.
The 2nd saga depicts him of infiltrating the naval base as a spy for the emperor. The emperor has suspected that there were men with other motives and to overthrow the current admiral in order to gain authority in the navy. Chinmi, Dan Dan and Xu Fang were sent to act as spies for the emperor. This saga spans from volume 14 - 20.
The new series now spans from volume 1 - 20.
An anime adaptation of early chapters of the original manga which revolved around Chinmi's student years in the Dairin Temple was released in 1988. It consisted of 20 half hour episodes. An English dub was released in the early 90's titled "Kung Fu Boy". An Arabic dub was also released under the title "MadressaT El Kung Fu" (Kung Fu School) in the early 90's and is considered to be one of the most popular animes in the Arabic speaking countries.
